What is Assassin’s Creed Odyssey about?
This game definitely shows the glory behind the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is set over 2400 years ago in Ancient Greece. There’s just so much to explore in terms of locations, characters, and quests. You get the choice between playing as a male or female character (who are siblings), which hasn’t really been done before in the previous games.
Did I forget to mention that the graphics are absolutely stunning? There’s just so much room to explore this world, with hidden collectibles and important landmarks lying around. Along with picking your own character, you can go far with customization in this game by designing your own ship, choosing your crew, and defining your own fate.
Something else that Assassin’s Creed Odyssey implements well is the story-driven gameplay. You can actually make choices that impact your story, whether it be romantic relationships or a life-and-death situation. Ultimately, you can decide what kind of person your character will be. Bloodthirsty? Compassionate?
How do you play Assassin’s Creed Odyssey?
In classic Assassin’s Creed style, you can maneuver around the map stealthily. Climbing up buildings gives you vantage points, while also opening up the possibility to perform stealth kills. You can also take advantage of a revamped combat system, learning different kinds of tricks and moves to defeat opponents. There are also interactable objects around that you can interact with to hide from incoming enemies. Since there is a war between two major factions, you’ll have to decide who to stand with (or just remain neutral).
This significantly impacts the loot you may receive from sieges. Also, don’t get into too much trouble… Constantly pulling off dangerous stunts will get a bounty placed on your head! And that means several waves of relentless enemies coming your way, including some dangerous mercenaries that will stop at nothing to eliminate you as a threat. There is a little system where you can essentially ‘overthrow’ others, by going into forts and whatnot.
After progressing past the few beginning levels, you can officially have access to your very own ship ‘Adrestia’. Free to sail the seas, you can expect to get yourself into a multitude of naval battles. I commend Assassin’s Creed for having their own ship mechanics. You can find loot and destroy hostile ships. Speaking of the latter, once you deplete a ship’s health enough, you can actually go onboard and fight to lay siege.
There’s also something else unique about Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. If you aren’t necessarily happy with the kind of playstyle you’re going with, then you can actually reset your abilities for some in-game currency. At one point, you could eventually work towards delivering a badass ‘Spartan kick’ or critical assassination. As I mentioned before, this Assassin’s Creed game has a lot of story-driven elements. You can choose your romances and have control over the fate of several characters. In my eyes, this is what makes Odyssey one of the best of the bunch.
In general, the gameplay from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is excellent, as there are mechanics to level up, improve your gear, and excel in certain skills or talents. The ancient setting really gives off a nice vibe as well, since we can see how Assassin’s Creed pulls off its spark in these times. I personally find that this game stands out from the others in the franchise. It’s basically a ‘breath of fresh air’ that is very much welcome!
